The Nowra RSL Sub-Branch are putting out a big call-out to the Nowra/Shoalhaven Community.
Friday 24th February is ‘Purple Poppy Day’.
Here is the history:
In 2019 Minister Scott Buchholts announced in Federal parliament that 24th February would be Australia’s official war animal day. We are all being encouraged to wear a purple poppy in recognition of the deeds and sacrifice our four legged and feathered diggers have made and continue to make serving alongside our troops.
The president of the Australia War Animal Memorial Organisation and recent ANZAC of the year award recipient Mr Nigel Allsopp said “the 24th of February or purple poppy day is a day all Australians can wear a purple poppy and a time to think not only about our soldiers who gave their lives in war, but also spare a thought for the four-legged and winged hero’s that fought and died alongside our troops”.
We have an ambitious plan to decorate our WW2 Memorial at the Nowra Showground with purple poppies to commemorate the sacrifice of those we lost. The plan is that we will place some crocheted/knitted purple poppies around Soldiers Memorial Pond on the morning of the 24th. To make it bigger and better we are asking that you the community give us a hand with making poppies, or buying them from our badge selling stalls at Coles and Stocklands on Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th, and placing them at the memorial to make a grand display.
We will have different purple poppies for you to purchase, to decorate and/or to wear to show your support for the day and the animals.
As an aside, I would like to put a call out for any spare purple wool or black buttons for our wonderful crafty people that are already hard at work creating their wonderful purple poppies.
